PHILOSOPHY
Context
The ocean has no equivalent on earth as it spreads over the largest part of the planet. It is essential to the air we breathe, to the water we drink, to the food we eat and to the climate under which we live.
UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Oceanographical Commission, Johannesburg, 2002.
France’s maritime territory is the second largest worldwide and is spread over an array of different climatic regions.
This rich diversity brings with it important responsibilities in the context of France’s role in the international community.
The Planète Mer project was born out of the oceans’ unique importance for the future of humanity and of France’s exceptional maritime inheritance.
